Arabic Studies
At GIS we teach Arabic in accordance with the requirements of the KHDA and the Ministry of Education combined with the standards and requirements of the IB curriculum. The Arabic lessons are compulsory. The students attend either Arabic A or Arabic B classes. All Arab students (registered at the school with an Arab passport) to study Arabic as a first language (Arabic A) from Pre-K to Grade 12 inclusive. All students registered at the school with a non-Arab passport to study Arabic as an additional language (Arabic B) from Pre-K to Grade 9 inclusive. In Secondary school, non-Arab students may select Arabic A or B as part of the regular curriculum for Grades 10, 11 and 12.
To help provide an authentic learning experience, we enhance the syllabus with a range of collaborative experiences inside and outside the classroom. These include storytelling, listening to international texts and narratives in Arabic, creative writing and watching films and plays. We also take part in popular competitions. Externally, these include the UAE-wide Arabic Reading Challenge and the Emirates Airline Festival of literature and poetry. And internally we stage our own events during the Arabic Language Week, including a Spelling Bee, short story writing competitions and poetry recitals.
